Occasionally a window of pure opportunity opens, and, I was fortunate enough to find my life going in a new direction. At this moment in time, I am very fortunate. I have my health, leisure time and enough cash to pursue watercolor as a creative expression. In the past year or two that expression has become a need rather than an indulgence. And I experience a creative energy when I am painting alongside some very creative people at Betsy's studio. There are rules to watercolor—most of which I don't know yet. When I'm painting. I look at the blank watercolor paper. It looks back at me. Usually I'll try to copy something—a photograph perhaps, but it turns into something else—sometimes right away—sometimes days later. Landscapes form themselves. Most of them I don't recall ever having seen, at least in this lifetime. But they become very familiar as the the topography builds itself in the real world with line and color. I am bound to try to faithfully record what I see. I have no idea what I will see a year from now. |
